The Standard KilnShield is designed to protect fragile fire brick, disburse body weight evenly, and ensure a clean lid-to-brick seal. By using KilnShield, you can avoid costly damage and repairs, plus it is the manufacturer-recommended solution for preserving the life of your important investment.
The Standard KilnShield’s ergonomic design protects a 3 brick area from the pressure and friction damage that commonly occurs when loading and unloading your work. Easy to use design makes loading easier – and with less back strain. The soft silicone top layer also protects clothing from damage. Easy to store by hanging on the wall or mounting to your kiln’s control panel with our optional magnets, sold separately.

Facts About Kiln Brick
99% of top loading kilns on the market are composed of K23 soft brick. This brick is soft enough to crumble like graham cracker with a gentle scrape. The top layer of bricks in a kiln where potters rest their forearms and elbows, kiln shelves and pottery take damage throughout the life of the kiln. The costs of labor and material to replace even just the top layer of bricks in a kiln that is expected to run for 20 years would cost $400-$800 each time it is serviced.
How it works
KilnShield is placed on the top layer of bricks – the area leaned on when loading and unloading. KilnShield speeds up loading time, protects your kiln brick, and puts less strain on your back.
Important: Remove KilnShield prior to closing the kiln lid to fire or rest.
Design
KilnShield is made from 16 gauge galvanized steel to disburse weight and protect soft brick from damage. For comfort, a soft silicone foam pad rated up to 250 degrees to lean on during loading and unloading. KilnShield comes with holes for hanging, or can be magnetically attached to the control panel for easy access.
KilnShield’s design is customized to your kiln, ensuring proper and accurate fit with minimal assembly required. KilnShield fits most major brands of ceramic top loading kilns including Skutt, L&L, Cone Art, Amaco, Paragon, etc.
The Lifetime Warranty offers years of use and kiln preservation.
How to Choose Your KilnShield Size
How many bricks go around your kiln
Count how many bricks the kiln has on the top layer. Standard, medium, and large kilns have between 8, 10, or 12 bricks.
Determine the thickness of the kiln wall
This measures from the inside of the brick to the kiln to the exterior metal band of the kiln. The width will be 2.5″, 3″, or 3.5″. See images below for details on how to measure the wall of your kiln.
Select between Standard and Deluxe
Standard KilnShield protects 3 top bricks and Deluxe protects 6 bricks (deluxe folds in half for easy storage)
How to measure the thickness of the kiln wall
Take ruler or tape measure and put it across the brick, as shown below, and measure the total wall thickness of the kiln from the inside edge of the kiln brick to the exterior metal band encompassing the kiln. This will be either 2.5”, 3” or 3.5”.
