Kiln Shelves
Kiln shelves give your pieces a sturdy, heat-safe surface to fire on. From full shelves to half shelves and specialty shapes, there’s an option for just about any kiln setup. Having the right shelves makes it easier to load your kiln efficiently and get consistent firing results.
Tip: Look for shelves that are around 2-3 inches smaller than the inside diameter of your kiln. This room is needed to lift the shelves in and out of the kiln while wearing your kiln gloves.
Note: Exact dimensions of a shelf may vary by less than 0.25″ from batch to batch.
Kiln shelves come in a variety of materials like cordierite and silicon carbide, each offering different levels of strength, heat resistance, and durability. Cordierite shelves are a popular go-to for most electric kilns thanks to their affordability and solid performance. Silicon carbide shelves are more advanced and ideal for high-temperature or frequent firing because they’re lightweight and resist warping. The size and shape of your shelves can also help you get the most out of each firing, especially when paired with posts or risers. It’s a good idea to rotate your shelves and apply kiln wash regularly to keep them in great condition. No matter what type of kiln you’re using, having quality shelves makes a big difference in how your pottery turns out.
