The Lester PlasterBat System is so
easy to use that anyone can make the PlasterBats and install the
Adjustable Bat Pins. The PlasterBats and Adjustable Bat Pins are
designed by Sam Lester at Spun Earth Pottery Supply in Forest Virginia
for potters and students that want the benefits of plaster and the
ease and convenience of bat Pins. The system works on any wheel with
bat Pin holes. It is ideal for studios with multiple wheels and
conveniently works with other attachments. Simply make the PlasterBats
with the PlasterBat Mold, install the Adjustable Bat Pins, and you are
ready to enjoy the benefits of plaster and the secure fit of bat Pins.
A PlasterBat is simple and easy to
make and comes with clear and easy-to-follow instructions. The
PlasterBat System is designed to use USG No. 1 Pottery Plaster for
optimum strength and absorption. PlasterBats have a hard, smooth,
flat, flawless working surface. Two, large-diameter, ¾" holes in
the bottom of the PlasterBat mate with the Adjustable Bat Pins and are
lined with wear-resistant plastic sleeves. The sleeves are an
essential part of the PlasterBats. They absorb the force of the o-ring
and minimize wear to the holes. Without the sleeves, the holes would
wear, open up, and fail prematurely.
The Adjustable Bat Pin is at the
heart of the Lester PlasterBat System. The Adjustable Bat Pin is the
only Pin on the market that compensates for mismatch between the
wheel’s Pin holes and the PlasterBat’s Pin holes. The Adjustable
Bat Pin permits the bat holes in the PlasterBat to be precisely
aligned with the Adjustable Bat Pins mounted onto the wheel. The
precise fit allows minimum effort to be exerted by the potter during
bat mounting and removal. The Adjustable Bat Pin has a large diameter
that improves mating, and creates more interface surface area for an
improved snug, secure fit. An o-ring is located in a groove around the
Adjustable Bat Pin to create a consistent snug and secure fit.
Together, the o-ring and large diameter, permits greater force to be
applied for faster, easier centering. Because the o-ring is removable
and mounted in the Adjustable Bat Pin, it can easily be removed and
replaced when it wears out.

PlasterBats and
PlasterBat Molds come in two systems: the Easy
Mate System and the Standard Fit System.
The “Easy Mate" system has large, ¾" diameter Adjustable Bat
Pins and PlasterBat inserts. The larger diameter makes it easier
to fit the blind sleeve located in the bottom of the PlasterBat onto
the Bat Pin. For new potters or potters that currently do not
use bats, select the “Easy Mate" System. The “Standard Fit
system is compatable with standard 3/8" bat pins and comes with
3/8" Adjustable Bat Pins and 3/8" PlasterBat inserts. For potters
that are currently using bats with 3/8" holes and wish to continue
to use them with PlasterBats, select the “Standard Fit" System.
Whichever one you select, you will be delighted with the snug, secure,
precise fit that only the Lester Bat System achieves while enjoying
the benefits of plaster bats.
Finally, select
the bat pin spacing that’s right for you. Simply, measure the
distance between the pin holes in your wheel and select the Plaster
Bat Mold that fits your wheel (the pin spacing on most wheels is
10").
