During the process of "firing," many chemical reactions take place within clays and glazes. There are a wide variety of organic and inorganic chemicals and minerals that expel toxic fumes when heated to very high temperatures. These fumes can collect and create an unhealthy and unsafe working environment. Additionally, electric kilns produce very significant levels of heat, which can create an unpleasantly warm working environment.
