Jupiter Features

most fire to cone 10

  • Hot enough to fire stoneware and porcelain

  • The 18" high J23 and J2918 are only rated to Cone 5. This is because of the greater percentage of unheated surface area in the kiln (i.e. total surface area - which includes the top and bottom - to total heated area

brick hardened with special coating & Hardener

L&L coats there firebrick with a proprietary reflective ceramic coating which penetrates, binds and hardens the surface of the entire interior of the kiln.

  • This reduces brick dusting. which promotes a clean interior of the kiln.

  • It increases brick life by reducing chipping and spalling.

  • It increases operating efficiency and uniformity by reflecting heat back into the kiln.

elements

ALL ELEMENTS ARE THE SAME FOR EASY & ECONOMICAL REPLACEMENT

  • All element resistance values are the same in each kiln.
  • There is no need to carefully match elements when replacing elements.
  • THIS MEANS THAT YOU CAN REPLACE ONLY ONE OR TWO ELEMENTS IN THE KILN (RATHER THAN A WHOLE EXPENSIVE SET) AND STILL HAVE A UNIFORMLY FIRING KILN!
  • Our multi-zone control on both manual and automatic kilns makes this possible.

ELEMENTS ARE EVENLY COILED

  • Elements are coiled on a special automatic machine that puts the proper spacing in the coil.
  • Evenly coiled elements mean no hot spots and longer element life.

STANDARD OR OPTIONAL HEAVY-DUTY ELEMENTS

  • Optional heavy duty elements last longer under high fire and heavy use conditions.
  • Heavy-duty elements use thicker wire and have a lower watt density (watts per square inch of element surface area). The lower the watts density the cooler the elements can run and the longer they last.

ceramic element connections

INDUSTRIAL TYPE ELEMENT CONNECTIONS WITH SPECIAL MOLDED CERAMIC BLOCKS

  • Elements are twisted around stainless steel screws mounted on solid ceramic terminal blocks. The entire assembly is mechanically secure and solid.
  • All contact between elements and wire lugs is over a wide surface of heavily torqued stainless steel washers.
  • Changing elements requires no special tools. Wires are not crimped to element ends as in some other brands. This means you can change elements yourself without buying an expensive tool or hiring a kiln repair person.
REVERSIBLE BOTTOM
TURN THE BOTTOM OVER IN CASE OF A FIRING MISHAP
The bottom can be easily reversed in case of a firing mishap (except for powered bottoms). Sectional construction makes this possible

three adjustable clamps per section

  • The stainless steel case of each kiln section is held together by three adjustable stainless steel clamps.
  • Behind the clamps, the stainless steel case is reinforced with a piece of aluminized steel to prevent distortion.
  • THIS MAKES THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION MUCH STRONGER THAN ON COMPETITIVE KILNS.
  • The clamps are easily accessible for adjustment.
  • Two clamps are used on lids and bottoms.

STAINLESS STEEL CLIPS
HOLD LID IN PLACE

  • Some manufacturers rely on the metal band around the kiln to hold the entire weight of the firebrick.
  • L&L screws on several stainless steel clips that hold the firebrick in the band.
  • This helps hold the brick in place -it does not rely on the uncertain tension of the stainless steel band.

optional powered bottoms

  • Optional bottoms with elements are available for the all 23" and 29" diameter Jupiter kilns (in fact all kilns except the J18 and J18X).
  • Powered bottoms for the 23" diameter kilns have one element which gives the bottom 1/2 the power of a section ring. The 29" diameter kilns have two elements on the bottom which gives the bottom 2/3 the power of a section ring.
  • The elements have the same resistance as the side elements - which simplifies replacement.
  • The bottom elements work off of a separate power circuit. In the manual kilns this circuit has its own infinitely variable zone switch. In the automatic versions this power circuit is controlled by the bottom zone of the DynaTrol. You also have the ability to control the amount of time that the bottom elements come on relative to the bottom zone (i.e., 10% to 100% of the time on that the bottom zone asks for heat).
  • These are highly recommended for the larger kilns because they improve gradient uniformity (by reducing cold spots in the bottom) and improve heat up times.
  • You can increase the temperature rating of a J23 or a J2918 to Cone 10 with a powered bottom.
  • The bottom is not reversible on powered bottoms.

optional powered sections

  • These powered rings are 9" high and can be put anywhere on the sectional Jupiter kilns.

  •  You must have an extra circuit on your control panel to accommodate these.

  •  In some cases that may mean getting a new control panel - but for some of our kilns there is already an extra unused circuit on the panel. Consult with factory if you have questions.

built to last, easy to maintain

  • L&L kilns are designed from the ground up to be easy to maintain yourself with no special tools.
  • Dyna-Glow element holders and simple industrial grade element terminations make changing elements the easiest of any kiln.
  • The hinged control box is easy to service and, moreover, can be easily detached and sent for expert factory service.
  • Our whole design philosophy is to make a kiln that lasts like the production tool it is.

multi-zone design

  • Whether you order a manual or an automatic control, every Jupiter kiln is multi-zoned.
  • Each 9" section (and optional powered bottom) has its own separate contactor or manual infinite switch.
  • In the case of the four or five section automatic kilns the middle sections operate together as one zone.
  • For automatic kilns the optional powered bottom is tied into the bottom zone. However, the DynaTrol allows you to adjust how much of the bottom's power is used (from 10% to 100%).

dyna-glow element holders

  • Protect soft fragile firebrick. Replacing elements does not damage brick. Elements don’t sag or fall out of grooves. No pins are necessary.
  • Have a hard, smooth surface which allows the elements to expand and contract freely. No loose brick particles will fall in the kiln and ruin ware.
  • The thin, dense wall of the holders reflects the infrared heat into the kiln. Elements operate at a lower temperature relative to the internal kiln temperature.

choice of 2½" or 3" Brick

  • 3" Brick is more energy efficient than 2½" firebrick, especially when doing high fires or long soaks

  • 3" brick allows for a slower natural cool down

c-UL-us LISTING

Jupiter kilns are c-UL-us listed.

This listing was recently renewed in 2000. L&L had entire line carefully reexamined and retested because of all the changes we have made since the listing was initially obtained in the 1970's.

A long and distinguished pedigree

Jupiter kilns are based on the long and well respected Econo-Kiln line that L&L has made for over 35 years.

1" Diameter peepholes

WITH SOLID STRONG NON-TAPERED PEEPHOLE PLUGS

  • Peepholes are a full 1" in diameter with a non-tapered hole. This allows for an unusually wide viewing area in the kiln.

  • The end of the peephole features a heat-lock head with helps seal up the peephole.

  • All L&L Kilns feature these solid ceramic peephole plugs. They are much stronger and heavier-duty than the typical hollow slip-cast peephole plugs you find on many competitors' kilns. Although they can break it is much less likely with these plugs.

  • Because the straight peephole plug is parallel to the floor there is much less chance of it falling out of the peephole and breaking on the ground.

ALUMINIZED FULL SHEET
HEAVY-DUTY 14 GAUGE STAND

  • The stand is made from aluminized steel. This is a process which helps the metal resists corrosion and high temperatures.

  • The stand for the Jupiter kilns is made from a sheet of aluminized steel with a channel bend on each side for extra strength. This full sheet provide continuous support for the kiln bottom.

  • The legs of the stand, which bolt onto the top, have a total of three bends on them to make them very rigid.

  • Studs are welded to the bottom of the stands to hold the Vent-Sure Collection Box. This makes it possible to add the Vent-Sure option at anytime

  • There are plastic caps that fit over the bottom of the stand legs to make it easier to move kilns on the floor.

STANDARD HINGE FOR SMALL JUPITER IS HEAVY-DUTY

The standard hinge used on the J18 through J245 (17½" diameter and 23.375" diameter kilns) is a heavy-duty but simple hinge. It attaches to the top section only. The hinge is made from 14-gauge galvannealed steel and powder coated. The hinge bar is a heavy 3/8" diameter machined rod which is cadmium plated. It is fastened on with cotter pins. The lid is held in the up position with two side mounted chains. In addition there is a safety chain which is meant to be attached to a wall. This is to prevent the lid from falling accidentally.

"easy-open, easy-load" spring loaded hinge

  • Allows Easy Access to Kiln - no support bars in the way.

  • The new "Easy-Open, Easy-Load" L&L hinge is counterbalanced with a torsion spring.

  • This dramatically lightens the weight of the lid making it easy to open and close.

  • A lighter lid also reduces lid and kiln lip damage.

  • A plunger-type safety latch holds the lid in place while it is open.

  • The lid, when open, is tilted away from the kiln opening allowing greater access to the interior. There are no lid supports in the way when loading your kiln. You can safely and easily load from both sides. Anyone who has tried to load a large kiln with a lot of work can fully appreciate this great feature.

  • The hinge extends over three kiln sections and ties the kiln together for stability.

  • The body of the hinge is made from galvannealed or aluminized steel.

  • All kilns include supplemental safety chains that hook to a wall as a precaution against accidental lid dropping.

CORROSION RESISTANT CASE MATERIALS

  • Kilns create corrosive conditions from heat and fumes. L&L kilns are built to last in this tough environment.
  • For instance, many clays contain sulfur and as well as the moisture that is in the clay. When combined under heat some of these substances combine to form highly corrosive sulfuric acid that can slowly eat away at the case of the kiln.

optional "pull apart" kiln

  • A few minor design changes make the Jupiter kilns easy to dismantle and reassemble to solve unusual loading problems such as firing high sculptures.
  • Kilns can be ordered with no hinge and an easy lift off top that features four handles.
  • The control panel is mounted on a floor stand.
  • The kiln sections easily plug into the panel. The cords are approximately 45" long. Thermocouple lead wires are lengthened to match length of section jumper cords.

optional un-powered 4½" sections

4½" high unheated sections are available for slightly increasing kiln height without adding power. These can adversely affect heat-up time, maximum temperature and temperature uniformity so we don't normally recommend them but we do make them available.

service and quality with a 3-year warranty

L&L Kilns are warranted to be free of defects in workmanship for a period of (3) years, starting on the date of original purchase from L&L Kiln Mfg., Inc. (L&L) or from an authorized L&L distributor or dealer, subject to the following terms, including the exclusions and limitations below. A sales receipt is required for proof of purchase. In addition, L&L may require you to deliver defective parts to L&L for examination.

removable control panel

AIR SPACE BETWEEN PANEL AND KILN PROTECTS CONTROLS
Only L&L features a control panel that is mounted off the hot wall of the kiln. This keeps the control components (which don't like heat) a lot cooler than in competitors designs.

The control panels have a hinged cover for easy access to the internal wiring. All wiring is neatly laid out in a professional and industrial way. Repair and troubleshooting is easy with this design.

on/off switch & control fuse

STANDARD THERMOCOUPLES ARE HEAVY-DUTY

The standard thermocouples used for the JD Automatic kilns are exposed 8 gauge Type K thermocouples which are fine for low-fire applications. Element connection wire and all terminations are properly calibrated for the thermocouples to keep them accurate.

OPTIONAL TYPE S PLATINUM THERMOCOUPLES  AVAILABLE

OPTIONAL INDUSTRIAL THERMOCOUPLE PROTECTION TUBES AVAILABLE

PILOT LIGHTS FOR EACH ZONE

  • Connected to each infinite switch is a pilot light.
  • This allows you to see whether or not that zone is firing.
  • With this information you can see how the kiln is operating. You can see how often the elements go on at various settings of the switch rather than relying on just the numbers on the dial.

DAWSON KILN SITTER/LIMIT TIMER

  • A Dawson LT3 (with back-up safety timer) shuts kiln off.
  • The Dawson is mounted several inches away from kiln case (with air in between) in its own separate panel box to keep it cool and improve the contactor life.
