Crystaliteâ„¢ Crystal Glaze Information

Crystalites are a non-toxic glaze combination in a jar. These unique, magical potions of colors and rock-like crystals produce dramatic effects that flow and melt during the firing process. This line of glazes has been formulated to react and flow like lead bearing glazes without the lead or safety concerns.

These glazes are non-toxic and certified by ASTM, meaning there is no lead added in their formulation. Crystalites can be used safely by children in schools, institutions or anyone with health concerns.

Due to the nature of the non-toxic formula, the crystals in these glazes settle quickly and will need to be stirred up frequently during application. The glaze crystals should be tapered off towards the bottom of the piece. The excess of crystals on the bottom can run, creating unsightly feet or lumps.

Interesting patterns may be obtained by placing several rings of crystals in a necklace-like placement around the piece. Straining the glaze will make this easier. Apply the crystals with a brush or small spoon for this effect. Remember, the beauty of these glazes is the disbursement of the crystals to produce even patterns on the finished piece.

  • Apply to shelf cone 04 bisque using an oval mop or soft fan brush.
  • Apply 2 coats, making sure to shake the jar for each. On the third coat, stir and shake the crystals into the glaze. Dip applicator to the bottom of the jar and pick up crystals and evenly brush them on to the piece.
  • Avoid heavy amounts of crystals towards the bottom.
  • Fired to cone 06.
  • Can be used with other non-toxic glazes or Crystalites.

The firing temperature of the Crystalites is shelf cone 06, but most can be fired up to shelf cone 6. There is no need to fire glazes any hotter to make the crystals flow, bloom more or to pattern better.
